Where is it written that painted trim has to be white?  You should only paint your trim white when you have white in the room.  If there is no white in your fabrics, rugs, or accessories choose a different color.  Being an interior designer, this is the hardest thing to convience my clients to do.  Those who do absolutley love the results.  I can't tell you how many clients have told me that painting the trim another color was their favorite part of the design project.
